What is Stigma? Why is it a problem?
There are many types and kinds of stigma. At Knock Out The Stigma, Inc. (“KOTS“) our mission is to end the stigma(s) associated with #MentalHealth. Most often for us, stigma is when someone, perhaps even yourself, views a person in a negative way just because they have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as a feeling of judgment or shame coming from someone else. Others report how they apply stigma to themselves confusing feeling bad with being bad or “crazy.”
Life itself is a challenging game. Playing the game with a mental health condition presents a unique set of obsticles that are only deepened and worsened by the impact of stigma. Stigma gets in people’s way. They are afraid of being labeled with the “crazy” scarlet letter. Being impacted by stigma often leads to isolation, self-blame, and negative self-talk all which are counter-productive to the community and support involved in recovery, thriving, and well-being.
